The Interreg South Baltic Programme’s Annual Event of 2025 took place among the scenic and inspiring surroundings of Rønne, Bornholm, at the Green Solution House hotel. Over two days, more than 100 participants gathered to celebrate regional cooperation, showcase innovative projects, and explore new opportunities for collaboration. The event coincided with the Interreg Cooperation Day, a day celebrated annually and dedicated to highlighting cross-border partnerships across the European Union and beyond, as well as marking the milestone of Interreg’s 35th anniversary – a testament to decades of successful cooperation that has transformed our region.
The first day opened with a warm welcome from local representatives, Jacob Trøst, the Mayor of Bornholm, representing the local authority of Denmark, and Monika Jurczyk, representing the Programme Managing Authority from the Polish Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy. Their inspiring speeches set an optimistic tone for the event. Participants then gained insights into the current state of the Programme from Małgorzata Skolmowska, Head of the Joint Secretariat, who provided an overview of ongoing initiatives and future directions.
A lively panel discussion followed, led by Marta Niciejewska, Deputy Head of the Joint Secretariat, focusing on how Interreg South Baltic projects are transforming the region. The panel featured notable experts: Maria Lindblad from the EU-Office Skåne Nordost on the D-EFFECT project; Professor Dr. Olga Anne from Klaipėda University discussing ECONUT; MSc. Bartosz Pietrzykowski from Eco-Construction on LoCaGas; and Niels Henrik Holländer from Zealand University Hospital sharing insights about the AMBeR project. Their presentations highlighted innovative solutions in sustainability, health, and regional development.
Attendees enjoyed a bustling mini-expo featuring around fifteen project stands, offering a perfect platform for networking and forging new partnerships. The projects ranged from the eco-friendly solutions to the blue economy innovations, illustrating the Programme’s diverse and ambitious scope. The day concluded with engaging projects’ study visits, deepening the understanding of practical solutions in action. These included:
Circular Economy at BOFA in Rønne, where Director Jens Hjul‑Nielsen presented the vision and work of BOFA, followed by visits to projects such as Wasteman, ReLooped, and STRIVE, showcasing waste management, resource reuse, and recycling technologies.
Green Transition – decarbonising, water and blue economy at Bornholms Energi & Forsyning’s Svaneke Wastewater Plant, featuring projects like STEP and ISMA, focusing on water management and sustainable energy solutions, and visiting Østerlars Heat Plant in Gudhjem for the DeCarbonDHS project.
Culture and Tourism at NaturBornholm in Aakirkeby, showcasing projects such as Archaeobalt and Biking South Baltic, which promote cultural heritage and regional tourism development.
Green Transition in transport sector and scenic bus routes around Rønne seaport. Here, projects like Transport Loops, SECMAR, and CAR welcomed participants in the premises of the Townhall and demonstrated innovative approaches to sustainable transport and mobility.
The evening’s highlight was a lively reception with local folk music, where participants relaxed, dined, and celebrated the spirit of regional cooperation through shared music and dance.
Day two began with further networking over coffee before diving into specialised workshops designed specifically for the South Baltic community. These sessions allowed participants to explore topics such as navigating changes during project implementation, mastering reporting practices, and creating projects’ lasting impact. Experts from the Joint Secretariat and the Interact Programme guided attendees through practical tips and shared real-life examples.
Before closing, each workshop was summarised on stage, leaving participants with inspiration and tools to embed their project results into sustainable regional development. The event ended on a high note, encouraging all attendees to carry forward the momentum of cooperation, innovation, and positive change.
