Converting low‑calorific landfill gases into green electricity and heat to cut methane emissions and support cleaner local energy in the South Baltic area.

Overview: The project addresses methane emissions from landfills by developing and testing technologies to convert low‑calorific gases into green electricity and heat, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing local energy production in the South Baltic area.

Key Objectives: The project aims to identify and validate practical methods for utilising low‑methane, low‑calorific off‑gases for energy generation, to cut spontaneous methane release and support decarbonisation of waste management.

Main Activities: Activities include laboratory analyses of artificial low‑calorific landfill gas, pilot installations testing three utilisation technologies, techno‑economic feasibility studies, and development of a user‑friendly decision‑making tool for operators. Dissemination through conferences and study visits, plus case studies and stakeholder consultations, support the preparation of practical recommendations for landfill operators.

Impact: The project reduces methane emissions and increases local production of green electricity and heat, provides landfill operators with tested technological options and decision support, and strengthens regional capacity to manage waste‑to‑energy solutions across the South Baltic area.
