Reducing plastic pollution in the Baltic Sea by promoting the collection, reuse, and recycling of ocean-bound waste.
Overview: The project targets the pressing issue of ocean plastic pollution, which adversely affects marine life and biodiversity in the South Baltic area. By focusing on both land- and sea-based sources of plastic waste, the initiative seeks to reduce the flow of plastics into the ecosystem.
Key Objectives: The initiative aims to enhance awareness and create incentives for preventing plastic waste from entering the Baltic Sea. It focuses on the collection, reuse, and recycling of ocean-bound macro litter plastics, especially from urban areas, to mitigate environmental impacts.
Main Activities: Key activities include identifying the challenges and opportunities for collecting and recycling ocean-bound plastic waste. The project involves collaboration with blue and green SMEs, environmental NGOs, and maritime clusters to develop innovative collection methods. It also gathers data on plastics in rivers and urban maritime environments to support the development of recycling solutions and raise ecosystem awareness.
Impact: By addressing the source of plastic pollution, the project aims to improve the ecosystem health of the Baltic Sea and stimulate innovation among SMEs for sustainable waste management. This approach promotes a greater understanding of environmental challenges and encourages the development of effective solutions across the quadruple helix.
