On this Earth Day, 22 April 2025, we embrance the theme “Our Power, Our Planet”, which highlights the importance of working together on initiatives like those from Interreg South Baltic. Since the Programme covers areas around the Baltic Sea, it is natural that most of the projects focus on environmental issues and new ways to reduce pollution. Four Interreg South Baltic projects have been given the status of Operation of Strategic Importance due to their significant impact on the South Baltic area. Three of these projects: Limit – Innovative concepts for sustainable water treatment targeting PFAS and other critical micropollutants from point sources in the South Baltic Sea, Circular Ocean Bound Plastic (COP), and Ecomarinas show how combined efforts can lead to meaningful environmental benefits in the region by helping to reduce pollution.
Limit Project: This initiative focuses on managing nutrient loading in coastal waters, essential for maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. By promoting sustainable agricultural practices and fostering stakeholder collaboration, the Limit project effectively reduces nutrient over-enrichment, improving water quality and safeguarding marine biodiversity.
Circular Ocean Bound Plastic: Tackling the pressing issue of plastic pollution, this project aims to develop sustainable waste management systems and engage local communities in preventive measures. By curbing the influx of plastics into our oceans, the project contributes to cleaner marine environments and the overall health of our coastal areas.
Ecomarinas: This innovative project promotes the development of eco-friendly marinas that prioritise environmental sustainability. By providing facilities and services that reduce ecological impact, Ecomarinas enhances the recreational boating experience while safeguarding the natural environment of the Baltic Sea.
Collective Impact: All three of these projects have received the **Operational Support Initiative (OSI)** status, reflecting their importance and potential in driving sustainable practices in the region. Their combined activities significantly contribute to the sustainability goals of the South Baltic Area, showcasing the power of collaboration and shared goals in addressing environmental challenges.
Join the Movement: This Earth Day, let us commit to supporting projects that protect and enhance our environment. By participating in local initiatives and promoting sustainability within our communities, we can all play a part in this collective effort.
As we reflect on the successes of Interreg South Baltic projects, let’s draw inspiration from their achievements and remind ourselves that together, we have the power to create a healthier, more sustainable planet for future generations.
