Sorte Muld Excavation

Hosted by

Bornholms Museum/ Aarhus University

The field of gold.

Sorte Muld is one of the most essential and precious Iron Age archaeological sites in Denmark. The area was extraordinarily rich, especially in the 4th to the 7th century. Previous excavations and many stray finds suggest that the area had connections to Frankish elite societies and was likely a place of worship. Archaeologists discovered there pagan temple and a vast collection of gold, votive foils. Who lived at Sorte Muld, was it a king? Was a temple built here, and did the gold foil figures adorn the central posts? Was it home of elites?

Bornholms Museum, together with Aarhus University and ArchaeoBalt Project partners, welcome to participate in Sorte Muld Excavation Open Days. It is a monthly cycle of cultural events aimed at popularizing the heritage of the Baltic Sea and archaeotourism.

From 13th of May until 7th of Jun will be organized meetings with experts, hiking and guided tours on the archaeological site, open excavations and conferences.

An exhibition accompanies open days.

Guided tour: English and Danish
