On this special day, we commemorate World Environment Day, established by the United Nations at the Stockholm Conference in 1972. Observed annually on 5 June in over 100 countries, this day serves as a vital reminder of the importance of harmonising civilization’s development with the health of our planet.
The Interreg South Baltic programme joins global efforts to promote environmental awareness and sustainable development. Currently, the programme co-finances 19 innovative projects under the priority Sustainable South Baltic, focusing on green energy, circular economy, and sustainable water management.
One notable project presented during the EU Green Week 2025 Stakeholders’ Day in Brussels (3–5 June) is COP Circular Ocean-bound Plastic. This project addresses the pressing issue of ocean plastic pollution in the South Baltic Sea, where approximately 80% of waste stems from land-based sources. COP aims to identify solutions for collecting, reusing, and recycling plastic waste that reaches our seas, engaging blue and green SMEs, NGOs, universities, and maritime clusters. Recognised as an Operation of Strategic Importance (OSI), the project fosters innovation in plastic waste management and raises awareness of environmental challenges across the region.
We encourage everyone to celebrate this day by reflecting on our individual and collective roles in protecting our environment. Through initiatives like COP and regional cooperation, we can create a sustainable future for the South Baltic region and beyond.
Let’s take this opportunity to look after our planet – today and every day.
